Jersey Triathlete: Philippa Worth

Name: Philippa Worth
Age: 40
Nickname: Phil
Profession: Doctor – GP

Prefer Swim, Bike or Run? It used to be the run, but once I overcame my fear of the sea (with the help of Sally Minty and the LDSC) a few years back and most recently Bill and the JSC Masters crew, the swim has become my favourite. After spraining my ankle badly at the end of last year I have a found love for my bike!
Average hours you train per week? With work and 3 children this has always been a challenge. Up until last year I would train around 6hrs, but since making the team I have trained about 10 hours per week.
What bike(s) do you ride? William (‘Willy’) the Willier Izoard Road Bike – and this year ‘Cyril’ the Cervelo P2
Favourite pre-race meal?  If early AM – a bowl of crunch nut cornflakes with granola.
Favourite sports person? Currently I am in awe of Gwen Jorgensen – if only I could run at half her speed!
Best Tip for newbies? Overcome your fears and enjoy it!
Best and worst race moment?  Best: At my last Olympic race this year in London, coming in 6th Lady overall and 2nd in my age group. And nearly – oh so nearly beating my husband – who sprinted past me in the last 200 metres – I so thought I had him this time! Worst: On my first ever sea triathlon at La Pulente –  I swam to the first buoy and was so scared I swam straight back! I thought people only surfed in those conditions, not swim!
Favourite saying or motto that you live by? Just get on with it
Favourite place in Jersey? Anne Port and running along the coast path from Gorey to St Catherine’s
Have you ever peed in a pool? No – but the sea – well maybe….
Any superstitions? I can only sip from my water bottle in 3’s or 5’s, same with chocolate buttons, I can only eat them in 3’s or 5’s
You’ve split your Tri suit badly around the bum in T2. Pull out or carry on?
The competitor in me says carry on – but I think I would ask a spectator for a top to tie around my waist and protect my modesty!
